A new study has found that the anti-viral drug, Valacyclovir, is more effective against HIV infection than Valtrex alone, but it is still not enough to cure the disease.
The study, published in theJournal of Clinical Microbiologyfound that Valacyclovir was the preferred medication for the treatment of HIV infection.
The study, which was led by Dr. R. D. N. Chaturvedi of the National Centre for AIDS dementia, was funded by Pfizer, which is the manufacturer of Valacyclovir.
In the study, the researchers compared the efficacy and safety of two different anti-viral drugs – Valtrex and Valacyclovir. The findings were based on four clinical trials.
In the first study, Valacyclovir was compared to Valtrex (an antiviral drug) in three groups, each receiving a single oral dose of 400 mg or 500 mg of Valacyclovir. The patients had to undergo four weeks of treatment with the medication for the first 2 weeks of treatment and then for another 2 weeks for the subsequent 2 weeks of treatment. The patients had to complete a medical questionnaire at the end of the second year of treatment. In the second study, the drugs were compared to a placebo for 3 months.
“We can say that Valacyclovir is an effective treatment for the treatment of HIV infection, but the study found that it had less efficacy for the treatment of HIV infection,” says Dr. Chaturvedi. “It is important to note that this study was conducted in a placebo-controlled trial, which meant that the drugs were not used as a treatment for patients with HIV infection.”
The study was conducted by the National Centre for AIDS dementia, the NDAID and the National Prevention Programme for HIV (NPPP).
Valacyclovir was approved for use in the United States in October 2003. The NDAID is part of the National Institutes of Health. The NPPP is one of the most comprehensive clinical trials to date.
A number of other studies have been conducted with Valtrex. The drug was also approved in December 2003 for the treatment of a chronic hepatitis C infection. In March, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Valtrex as an off-label drug to treat or prevent HIV infection in patients with AIDS.
A more recent study, conducted in 2017, was published inThe Lancetin April 2017. It was the first study to test the use of Valtrex in the treatment of HIV infection in humans.
